Lake Geneva Badger blew open a relatively close game in the fourth quarter and handed the Burlington High School girls basketball team a 54-37 loss Tuesday.
The Demons trailed 11-6 after one quarter, 26-18 at the half and 39-31 after three quarters. But Badger held Burlington to just six fourth-quarter points, while putting up 15 themselves, to grab the 17-point win.
Ashley Derks was the only Demon player in double figures with 10 points. Badger had two players in double figures – Lilly Quinn with 15 and Karina Reeves with 14.
The Demons shot poorly from the free-throw line, sinking just seven of 18 foul shots, while Badger got to the line 30 times, making 17.
The loss dropped Burlington to 1-9 overall, and 1-5 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Trailing by just four points going into the fourth quarter, the Demons had a chance for its second win of the season Jan. 3 at Union Grove. A 17-9 margin, though, by the Broncos in that final quarter led to a 53-41 loss.
The Demon girls led 8-7 after one quarter but fell behind 24-20 at the half. That margin remained the same after three quarters – 36-32.
Poor free-throw shooting by Union Grove kept Burlington in this game, as the Broncos made just 19 of 40 foul shots. Burlington’s percentage was not a lot better as they made 12 of 23.
Ellen Stang led the Demons with 11 points, with Jenn Stevens adding 10 and Emily Golon 9. But that accounted for nearly 75 percent of Burlington’s scoring as no other Demon girl had more than three points.
The Union Grove game was the first of eight consecutive road games in January and early February for the Demons. The Badger game was the second of those road games.
Burlington will travel to Paddock Lake to take on Westosha Central Friday at 7 p.m.
Next week, the Demons will be at Kenosha Bradford for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 15, followed by a non-conference matchup at Racine Horlick on Friday, Jan. 18.
