The Burlington High School boys golf team was consistent throughout the Southern Lakes Conference golf majors this season, and that same consistency was evident at the SLC Meet Tuesday held at Hawk’s View Golf Course, Lake Geneva.
As the team generally did throughout the season, the Demon boys finished second behind Waterford. Waterford carded a team score of 326, with Burlington 10 strokes back with a 336.
“I am pleased with our performance,” head coach Bill Berkholtz said. “Our seniors – Tony Stang, Scott Vyhanek and Jay Essman – shot well enough for us to finish in second.”
Sophomore Brian Dankle was the meet medalist with a 79, yet, according to Berkholtz did not have his “A” game.
That “speaks volumes about his value to the team,” Berkholtz said.
Stang added an 85, Essman an 86, Geiger an 88 and Vyhanek an 89.
Big Foot Invitational
On Monday, Burlington participated in the Big Foot Invitational played at Abbey Springs Golf Course in Fontana.
In the 19-team event, the Demons finished third overall with a score of 344.
Dankle was fourth overall with a 79 to lead the Demon squad. Vyhanek carded an 84 (eighth overall), Stang an 86 and Geiger a 95.
Edgerton won the invitational with a 325, with Big Foot second with a 339.
“We didn’t play our best and still took third,” Berkholtz said.
Brown’s Lake Rider Cup
In what may have been their best performance of the season, the Demon golfers won the Brown’s Lake Rider Cup event held Saturday at Brown’s Lake Golf Course, Burlington.
The Demons carded a team total 228, four strokes better than second-place Waterford, which had a 232, in the 10-team event.
“I was pleasantly surprised by winning the Rider Cup,” Berkholtz said. “We played very consistently for one of the first times all year. It was nice to see all six kids play well enough to be in the 70s.”
The Brown’s Lake Rider Cup format is unique in that each squad has three teams of two who play six holes of a scramble, six holes of best ball, and six holes of modified alternate shot.
Stang and Vyhanek paired up to shoot a 74, the second-lowest score of the day on the par-72 course. They had nothing worse than a bogey, and even scored an eagle 3 on the par-5 15th hole.
The team of Dankle and Josh Ketterhagen carded a 76, with Geiger and Essman shooting a 78.
