Burlington High School boys basketball coach Steve Berezowitz admits his team has hit a little bit of a rough patch.
The Demons have lost three of their last four games, but Berezowitz said his team is sticking to its plan.
“We’re in that little bit of a rut,” Berezowitz said Tuesday.
BHS was coming off a 50-41 loss at Mukwonago Monday night after beating Delavan-Darien Friday 57-42.
The Demons are now 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference, a game back of league-leading Wilmot, whom BHS lost to Jan. 4.
In the game against Delavan, BHS struggled early, trailing by five after the opening quarter. BHS rallied to get back within two by the half, then opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run.
The Demons ended up outscoring the Comets 33-16 in the second half, including 11-3 in the third quarter.
“We played a little bit better defensively in the second half,” said Berezowitz. “But we decided to stick to our guns and do what we needed to do to get better.
“We gave Delavan a little bit of confidence in the first half,” he added. “I like how the kids came out in the second half. They did a nice job.”
Ben Geiger and Carson Biedrzycki both finished with 13 points, with Geiger hitting three of five tries from beyond the arc. Biedrzycki added 14 rebounds – 10 on the defensive end – and four assists.
James Tully pitched in nine points, while Ty Dennis and Jimmy Penzel added eight each. Jake Reetz had a team-best five assists, while he and Dennis both had two steals.
Against Mukwonago Monday night, the Demons just couldn’t take care of the basketball, committing 18 turnovers while forcing just six from the 12-2 Indians.
“That’s probably the definition of last night,” Berezowitz said. “They’re No. 7 in the area, and they’re big and physical.
“I thought our kids really battled,” he added. “We just need to improve on our decision making a little bit more.”
Reetz led BHS with 14 points before fouling out of the game, while Biedrzycki had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Dennis added nine points and eight rebounds, while Reetz and Jayden Essman both had a pair of steals and Essman four assists.
“We’re still trying to search for more than a couple of guys playing great on a given night,” Berezowitz said. “We’re getting there. That’s our focus.”
The Demons host Franklin Friday at 7 p.m., and start the second round of the SLC season at home Tuesday against Westosha Central at 7 p.m.
