Girls relay teams pace Demon runners

Led by their relay teams, the Burlington High School girls track and field squad finished 11th out of 17 teams at the Viking Indoor Invitational held Saturday at UW-Parkside.
All three of the relay teams scored points for the team. The 4-by-800 meter team, comprised of Kit Kocha, Meta Ehlen, Brittany Ehlen and Aleigha Barry, took second with a time of 10 minutes 44.81 seconds.
Head girls coach Dan Luneau noted that the time put the girls on the state honor roll.
“That’s a nice way to start the season,” Luneau said.
The 4-by-400 relay team comprised of Audra Weis, Meta Ehlen, Anna Vogt and Hannah Peterson was sixth in 4:26.60, and the 4-by-200 relay team of Weis, Hannah Wills, Vogt and Emma Fettig was seventh in 1:59.11.
“All of our relays did fairly well,” Luneau said.
Peterson finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.25 seconds.
“Any time you get a kid in the finals, I’m happy,” Luneau said.
Peterson also was eighth in the high jump (4-06).
Vogt, besides competing in the 4-by-200 relay, also ran in the 400, placing sixth in 1:07.23, and was a member of the 4-by-400 relay.
“She just had a good week,” Luneau said.
Audra Weis was fourth in the pole vault, clearing eight feet even, while Wills was seventh in the long jump (15-07.5).
Luneau added that the prolonged winter conditions have been affecting the field events the most, since there is no way to practice them indoors.
The Demon boys were 15th out of 17 teams, tallying 11 points.
Scotty Dycus had the best finish for the boys, capturing fifth in the 400-meter dash in 56.57 seconds.
Max Shenkenberg was sixth in the pole vault (10-06), and Zach Warzyniakowski was sixth in the 800 (2:07.10).
The final team point for the Demons was scored by Junior Miranda with an eighth-place finish in the long jump (18-11.5).
Both squads will participate in the Watertown Indoor Meet on Saturday at Watertown High School.
