As she has all season, Union Grove High School junior Cassy Goodrich has been a force to be reckoned with in various track and field events. That was no different Tuesday when Goodrich captured three titles at the Southern Lakes Conference Meet at Waterford.
Goodrich won the 100-meter dash in 12.67 seconds, the 200 in 25.32 and the 400 in 56.06.
That means Goodrich scored 30 of the Bronco girls 69 points in the meet.
Overall, the girls squad finished sixth. Lake Geneva Badger won the girls, as well as the boys, side of the meet.
In addition to Goodrich’s titles, Madelyn Schwartz won the 800 in 2:23.48 to give the Bronco girls four titles.
Alex Goodrich also scored a few points for the Bronco girls. She took second in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the 100 hurdles, fifth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump. That totaled 19 points.
The Bronco boys got victories from Joe Veselik in the 300 hurdles (42.29) and a conference title from the 4-by-200 relay team of Andy Hatch, Kyle Martinez, J.K. Witkofski and Dennis Hebron (1:33.08).
Besides his win in the 300 hurdles, Veselik finished second in the 110 hurdles
Witkofski also took second in the 200 and third in the 100-meter dash.
Delavan-Darien Invitational
With eight wins between the two squads, the Bronco girls captured third place and the boys fourth at the Delavan-Darien Invitational held Friday.
The girls tallied 85 points in the eight-team girls portion, while the Bronco boys had 93.66 points in the seven-team boys side.
“We had a really good performance,” head coach Joe Busalacchi said.
The Bronco girls won five events, with Cassy Goodrich victorious in three of them.
Goodrich won the 100-meter dash in 13.23 seconds, the 200 in 27.33 and the 600 in 1:43.38. The 600 is not a typical track event, but is held at the Delavan-Darien Invitational.
The same is true of the 1,000-meter race which Madelyn Schwart won in 3:14.45.
The fifth Bronco girl to win an event was Alex Goodrich in the 100 hurdles. She took the top spot with a time of 17.85 seconds.
Goodrich also finished second in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the long jump. In the 300, she set a personal record by two seconds.
“We were pretty excited,” Busalacchi said.
Her leap of 15 feet 3.5 inches in the long jump was also a PR.
Ryan Mevis won the 400 for the boys’ squad in a time of 52.94 seconds.
Busalacchi noted that he and his staff are in a tough spot with Mevis as he ran a great split earlier in the season in the 800. Because of that, Mevis will be moved up to the 800 for the rest of the season.
“His work load has increased,” Busalacchi said. “He’s adjusted well.”
The other two wins for the Bronco boys came in the relays. The 4-by-200 relay team of Andy Hatch, J.K. Witkofski, Kyle Martinez and Dennis Hebron won in 1:33.90.
The 4-by-400 team of Mevis, Jake Jossart, Joe Peterson and Martinez took the top spot in 3:43.24.
“Our boys relays are really coming on,” Busalacchi said.
Witkofski was second in the 200, Joe Veselik second in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, Luke Johnson third in the 1,600, Ryan Rebernick third in the shot put, and Cole Ryan third in the discus.
Overall, Busalacchi said he is very pleased with the progress of his team in a season when they have not had a track to practice on. The UGHS track area is under construction.
“As a staff, we’re really excited for the end of the year,” Busalacchi said.
