Although a number of athletes were gone on spring break, the Waterford High School boys and girls track and field squads placed fifth and eight, respectively, at the Racine Case Invitational held Saturday at UW-Parkside.

Head coach Jerry Glisch said the Wolverine boys had a great meet.

Of the 48 team points accumulated by the boys squad, 16 came in the shot put which senior Brandon Miller won, and senior Brandon Schindler was third.

Miller’s winning throw was 52 feet 7.25 inches, while Schindler had a heave of 47-08.

Senior Grant Brooks was second in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10 minutes 20.49 seconds, and then placed fifth in the 1,600 in 4:50.00.

“He had a great day,” Glisch said. “This was kind of a breakout week.”

The Wolverine boys also got an excellent performance from junior Cal Jaskie in the high jump. Jaskie cleared 5-10 to take second.

“He’s a phenomenal athlete,” Glisch said of Jaskie. “He floats over the bar.”

Glisch noted that Jaskie did not have a full season in track and field a year ago.

D.J. McGilvary was fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 9-06, and Collin Chart was fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-04.

Chart also scored points with a seventh-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.55).

Trent Rudebeck was eighth in the 1,600 in 5:02.36, and the 4-by-800 relay team also took eighth.

The Wolverine girls were led by senior Jenny Gilbreath, who was second in both the 200 (26.68) and 400 (1:01.07). Those 16 points were more than one-half the team total of 31 points.

“That was a really great meet for her,” Glisch said. “Jenny looks really good.”

Glisch added that Gilbreath’s second-place finish behind Union Grove’s Cassy Goodrich made a statement that she is ready to compete with the best.

The 4-by-800 relay team of Gabby Bergeron, Kayla Kinateder, Jessica Krupinski and Hannah Jost was fourth in 10:55.35.

The Wolverine girls also got points from Shauna Malchine (sixth, 400), Hannah Zimmerman (seventh, 55), Jost (sixth, 1,600), and the 4-by-200 relay team of Zimmerman, Natalie Erickson, Megan Schmidt and Samantha Jahnke.

New Berlin West Quad

The Wolverine boys won this quad March 27, edging New Berlin West 60.5 to 60, while the girls took second with 67 points.

“I was very pleased,” Glisch said. “I thought a lot of kids really showed their stuff.”

The highlight of this quad was Miller breaking the WHS school record in the shot put. His throw of 53-02.25 reset the school record he had broken earlier in his career.

“It was pretty incredible to watch,” Glisch said. “He’s definitely on the watch list for the state.”

The Wolverine boys got victories from Chart in the 55 hurdles (8.55), Brooks in the 3,200 (10:37.51), and Jay Espada in the triple jump (38-00).

The boys also had five second-place finishers, four thirds, and five fourths.

Gilbreath led the Wolverine girls with wins in the 55 (7.67), 200 (28.17) and long jump (16-07.75). Malchine won the 400 (1:09.20), and Jost the 3,200 (13:31.80). The 4-by-240 relay team also got a victory.

The girls squad added four seconds, six thirds, and three fourths.

The Wolverine girls participated in the Racine Park invitational Tuesday. Results of that meet were not available at press time.

Next up for both squads is the Badger Quad at Lake Geneva on Thursday, April 11.
