Six Waterford High School winter athletes have received first-team honors on the Southern Lakes Conference 2012-2013 Winter All-Conference teams.
The Wolverine wrestling squad had four grapplers make the first team. That is more than any other SLC squad.
Freshman Justin Ratkovec, at 106 pounds; senior Kody Azarian, at 126; sophomore Max Fisher, at 138; and senior Cody Nannemann, at 160, made the SLC wrestling first team.
Azarian, Fisher and Nannemann all competed in the individual state wrestling tournament this season, with Nannemann coming home with a state title. Azarian finished fourth.
A fifth Wolverine grappler was named honorable mention. That was sophomore Dylan Malecki at 170.
The other Waterford athletes named to first-team honors were Chris Benavides and Megan Jensen.
Benavides, a senior, made the boys basketball first team. He averaged 12.6 points per game for the Wolverines, who finished 13-11 overall, and 9-5 in the SLC. Waterford lost in the second round of the WIAA playoffs.
Jensen, a senior, made the SLC girls basketball first team. She helped the Wolverine girls to a 13-10 overall record, and an 11-3 SLC mark. The team lost in the opening round of the WIAA Division 1 playoffs.
Jensen was the team’s top scorer at 10.2 points per game, and made 54 three-pointers during the season.
Waterford also had three athletes get second-team honors.
Senior Tanner Hunsucker, who led the Wolverine boys in scoring at 16.9 points per game, made the boys basketball second team.
Sophomore Madison Blair was named to the girls basketball second team. She averaged 9.2 points per game for the Wolverines.
In gymnastics, sophomore Samantha Dziak made the second-team all-conference squad in the uneven bars.
Dziak led the Wolverine gymnasts in all categories throughout the season, as the Waterford gymnasts returned to the WIAA Division 2 state tournament for the second year in a row.
Getting honorable mention notice were seniors Brandon Schindler in boys basketball, Kelly Strasser in girls basketball, and Samantha Jahnke in gymnastics.
Junior Andrew Krause of the Burlington/Waterford co-op boys swim team also was honorable mention.
The Wolverine cheer teams did well in the conference competition with three top honors.
Sabrina Berg and Tylerann Priefer made all-conference dance, while the varsity dance squad took top honors with 244 points.
The varsity cheer squad was second.
