There’s been very little teams have been able to do all season long to stop the Westosha Central High School softball team.

The Waterford Wolverines got their lesson in futility May 30.

In a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal at Badger High School, the Wolverines struggled with errors in the first inning and dropped a 10-0, six-inning game to the Falcons.

Westosha (19-1) returns to state for the second year in a row. Waterford finished the season at 19-6.

Errors cost the Wolverines early on in the contest, resulting in an early 4-0 lead from Westosha. From there, it was the Sara Fonk show for the Falcons, as the senior pitcher struck out 11 in the complete-game effort.

“We just couldn’t put hits together and get an offense going,” said coach Ellen Blair. “Westosha took advantage.”

Westosha coach Tom Lampe said the start was just what his team needed.

“It settled us down and put them on their heels,” Lampe said.

Westosha ended the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With a single by Larkin Langston and an error, the three runs pushed the margin to 10-0.

“Waterford is a good team, and I wanted to finish them off as soon as possible,” said Lampe about his opponent.

Waterford junior Maddie Szalewski started the game, and went two innings with a strikeout and a walk. Caitlyn Whitford finished the contest, striking out three and walking none.

Waterford finished with three hits, two from Alyssa Schimelfengy and a double from senior Alyssa Helwig.

It was the last game for a senior class of seven players – Helwig, Megan Jensen, Kelly Strasser, Abbey Zortman, Alicia Barbian, Sara Terrian and Kelli Jackson.

Of those seven, six were regular starters this year.

“We had a great season. It was unfortunate to end this way,” said Blair. “Hats off to a great senior class.”
