Union Grove scored two runs in the top of the seventh and eked out a 3-2 win over host Waterford in a Southern Lakes Conference softball matchup Tuesday.
Waterford scored one in the bottom of the third to go ahead 1-0, then Union Grove tied the game in the top of the fifth.
The Wolverines scored again in the sixth to go up 2-1 before the Broncos pulled out the game.
Alyssa McClelland got the win on the mound for the Broncos, pitching the last 1 2/3 innings in relief of Allie Trudeau.
Maddie Szalewski took the loss for Waterford.
Vs. Beloit Turner
Union Grove took on Beloit Turner, the No.2-ranked team in Division 2 Monday and extended its win streak to 15 in a row with a 2-0 victory at Turner.
Union Grove is now 16-4 on the year, while Beloit Turner fell to 22-2.
The Bronco girls scored single runs in the third and seventh and made them stand up.
In the third, the Broncos got a two-out double off the bat of Claire Ryan, followed by a single from Sarah Petrovic to take a 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, a single by Ryan following a hit batter and a walk plated the second run.
The Broncos played errorless ball behind the solid pitching performance of Allie Trudeau, who held Turner to just four hits. She walked just one and struck out nine.
Union Grove managed just six hits off Turner’s Kelsie Packard.
“Packard did a heck of a nice job pitching out of jams and cutting us down when we were able to threaten,” Boylen said. “Fortunately for us, Trudeau and our D showed up to play today and we were able to make a couple of runs look really big.”
Oconomowoc Invitational
Wins No. 13 and 14 in a row took place at the Oconomowoc Invitational Saturday as the Bronco girls rolled over Waukesha North 11-1 in five innings and then defeated Brookfield Central 5-0.
Against Waukesha North, Union Grove loaded the bases in both the first and second innings. The Broncos managed just one run in the first, but put up a six-spot in the second.
The girls then added a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings. Waukesha North’s only run came in the third.
Alyssa McClelland improved her season record to 5-1, with one save, on the mound. She gave up just three hits, no earned runs, walked one, hit a batter, and struck out six.
Union Grove had three girls with two hits: Annie McClelland, Brooke Repta and Sarah Petrovic. The Broncos collected 10 hits.
Repta had three RBIs, and scored twice.
McClelland got on base four times (she also walked twice) and scored four runs.
Petrovic and Emily DeCheck added two RBIs apiece.
The game against Brookfield Central was scoreless until the fourth when Union Grove scored all five of its runs.
“It took the Broncos a little bit to get the timing down, but once they did, they were able to string together a number of hits and play some small ball,” head coach Ryan Boylen said. “With the strong performance turned in by (Allie) Trudeau in the circle, that would be all they’d need on the day to get the W.”
Trudeau scattered three this over seven innings, walking one, hitting two batters and striking out nine. Her record is now 6-3 with two saves.
Annie McClelland went 3-for-4 in this game, with Repta and Trudeau adding two hits each.
Petrovic and Trudean each had two RBIs in the fourth.
Vs. Lake Geneva
The girls traveled to Lake Geneva for a doubleheader with Badger on May 8 and came away with two more victories. In the opener, the Broncos won 11-1, and they finished off the sweep with a 14-3 win in the second game.
In game one, Badger took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Union Grove took the lead for good in the top of the second with two runs. The Broncos added six more runs in the third, three in the fourth and one in the sixth.
While the Bronco bats racked up the runs and collected 14 hits, Alyssa McClelland was limiting Badger to just the one run on two hits. She walked just one and struck out four.
Petrovic was the offensive star in this game, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Repta, Claire Ryan, and Cassidy Kortendick also had two hits, with Kortendick adding two RBIs, and Ryan one. Both Ryan and Kortendick had doubles.
In game two, the game was basically over after the first inning.
“We jumped on Badger quick, plating nine runs in the opening frame highlighted by Petrovic’s second home run of the day, a laser over the left center wall,” Boylen said.
Union Grove added three more runs in the second, and two in the third. Badger had three runs in the third.
Petrovic and Ryan each had three hits and two RBIs, while Annie McClelland, Repta and Kortendick each had two hits. Repta had three RBIs and McClelland two.
DeCheck and Petrovic kept Badger at bay with Petrovic getting the win, pitching three innings and giving up one run on two hits. Her record is now 2-0, with a save.
“We had a good day,” Boylen said. “The weather was hot, our sticks were hot, and we got an opportunity to move some people around to take looks at them at some different positions in case something should happen.”
