It came down to a playoff to determine whether Burlington High School senior Tony Stang would be going to the WIAA State Golf Meet.
Stang was one of five golfers from non-qualifying teams who competed in a playoff for three spots at state. Stang, along with Watertown’s Tyler Egnarski and Eric Jahnke, Janesville Craig’s Jordan Gagg and Janesville Parker’s John Milner all carded 78s on the Hawk’s View Golf Course Tuesday at Lake Geneva.
Sadly, it was Egnarski, Gagg and Milner who won in the playoff, with Stang and Jahnke eliminated.
“He just hit a bad drive on the first playoff hole (the par-4 12th) and couldn’t recover,” head coach Bill Berkholtz said.
As a team, the Demons finished sixth out of eight teams with a team total of 341. Beloit Memorial, with a 323, and Fort Atkinson, with a 325, qualified for state.
Besides Stang’s 78, Brian Dankle carded an 80, Scott Vyhanek an 89 and Ben Geiger a 94.
The fifth Demon who participated, but whose score did not count toward the team total, was Jay Essman. He shot a 100.
Dankle had a 37 on the front nine to tie to low score after the first nine. Berkholtz said, though, that Dankle started to go right with his shots and could not get it corrected. That led to three bad holes and a 43 on the back nine.
At the beginning of the season, Berkholtz believed his team had a shot at challenging for the Southern Lakes Conference crown. While that did not happen, the team did finish second behind Waterford. In 2012, the team had finished third.
