A physical Stoughton team took it to the Union Grove High School boys basketball team Friday in a WIAA regional game, ending the Bronco boys’ season with a 56-22 victory.
Stoughton dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a commanding 20-2 lead.
“We didn’t start playing until the second quarter,” head coach David Pettit said. “I think we were a little intimidated.”
Pettit indicated that Stoughton’s Nick McGlynn, who is 6’7”, affected a lot of the Broncos’ shots, which, in turn, affected Union Grove’s mentality.
“I think we played a little scared,” Pettit said. “They were very physical on defense.”
The result of that intimidation was a failure of the Bronco boys to go to the hoop and crash the boards.
Stoughton still led by 18 at the half – 26-8.
The Broncos scored the first five points of the third quarter, but then turned the ball over and lost the momentum. Stoughton built its lead to 39-15 after three periods.
Union Grove shot just over 25 percent from the floor, making only eight of 27 shots from inside the arc, and only two of 12 from three-point range.
The Broncos got to the foul line only four times, making none.
Andrew Kazikowski led Union Grove with seven points. McGlynn led Stoughton with 12.
The loss ended the Bronco boys season with an overall record of 10-14. They were 7-7 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Pettit indicated he is very excited about next season because 10 of his 12 varsity players will be returning, including the entire starting five.
“The core is intact,” Pettit noted, adding that the returning players now have an insight into what they need to do to excel next season.
The two seniors on this year’s squad were Caleb Christenson and Brad Ostrowski.
