It was a historic win for the Burlington High School girls soccer team. Thursday’s 1-0 win over Lake Geneva Badger in the Southern Lakes Conference title game clinched the first SLC girls soccer title in BHS history.
“We were the only sport in the school that had never won a conference title, and we changed that tonight,” head coach Joel Molitor said after the game. “This was our season goal from the end of last season, and we were able to carry through.”
The only goal in this game came late in the second half when in the 72nd minute Maddy Harry scored off an assist from Tegan Rock.
Goalkeeper Tanya Schilling made a great save at the end of the game to preserve the win.
“She dove backwards and punched the ball over the crossbar,” Molitor said. “I am so very proud of my players. They showed heart and determination, and they overcame a great deal of adversity and physical play to win against a solid opponent.”
The victory gives the Demon girls a 12-4-1 overall record going into postseason action. They ended the SLC season at 8-1.
Elkhorn defeated Union Grove – the team BHS beat in the semifinals – 6-2 to finish third in the conference tournament.
