Since raising their record to nearly .500 following a doubleheader sweep of Elkhorn April 29, the Burlington High School softball team has faced some very stiff competition. The result has not been kind to the Demon girls as the team has dropped eight in a row.
The latest loss was a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Waterford Monday, and a 2-0 defeat by Delavan-Darien also on Monday. Both games were played at Burlington.
The Delavan-Darien game had been postponed from Thursday when the two teams managed to get in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. Delavan-Darien won the first game 3-2 in extra innings.
The latest losses end the Demons regular season with a 7-16 record. They were 5-9 in Southern Lakes Conference play.
Even with the losses, head coach Gary Caliva said the girls have maintained a good attitude.
“They keep playing hard all the time,” he said.
Vs. Waterford
Caliva noted there was not much to say about the loss Monday to Waterford. The team managed just two hits and committed four errors.
“We had a few errors and you can’t make mistakes against good teams,” Caliva said.
Waterford scored twice in the top of the first, added one more in the second and three more in the third. The Wolverines finished off their scoring with two in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Randee Jackson took the loss for the Demons.
Vs. Delavan-Darien
In the game Monday, once again the Demon offense could not muster any runs in the 2-0 defeat.
Both teams had just four hits, but the Comets made good use of their hits, and also took advantage of Burlington errors to get an unearned run.
Danielle Koenen pitched well, striking out nine and walking three, but got no offensive support. Delavan scored single runs in the third and sixth.
On May 9, the defense once again let the Demon girls down as an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Comets a 3-2 win.
Delavan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Burlington scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Both runs scored on a two-run single by Sarah Rubach.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Delavan pushed one run across to tie it.
