It may not have been pretty, but Waterford’s 40-36 victory over Elkhorn at home Jan. 11 was exactly what the Wolverines needed – a win.
“We won,” said Waterford coach Dena Brechtl. “I did feel it was a strange game. We were in control almost the entire game, however, the scoreboard never showed it.”
Waterford had three starters in foul trouble early in the contest, as Kelly Strasser, Megan Jensen and Alyssa Helwig all picked up two fouls.
In the end, only Strasser fouled out of the game. Jensen bounced back to tie with Madison Blair for scoring honors with 13 points each, and both had six rebounds. Blair pitched in four assists.
The Wolverines also played without Jaycie Chart, who was out sick. Brechtl credited Kaylee Fry and Shannon Malchine for stepping into the gap.
Erin Schahczinski led Elkhorn with nine points, while Jessica Hauser added eight and Allyson Reeves scored seven and Nicole Enger six.
Boys
The return of Tanner Hunsucker proved to be just the push the Wolverines needed to get past Westosha Central Jan. 10 at home.
Hunsucker finished with a game-high 14 points, and hit 3-pointers in the victory.
Waterford led by eight at the half, but Westosha cut that lead in half in a third quarter that featured just 12 points between the two teams.
The Wolverines put the game away in the fourth quarter, hitting 13 of 18 free throws in the contest.
Chris Benavides added 10 points for the Wolverines. Ben Graveley and Glenn Karsten had 10 points each for the Falcons.
