The Waterford Union High School girls basketball team wanted to make sure there were no repeats of Dec. 14’s too-close-for-comfort win at home over Delavan-Darien.
On the road Friday against the Comets, the Wolverines jumped out to a 32-20 halftime lead and cruised home with a 66-40 victory.
With a 38-29 win over Union Grove at UG Tuesday in a boys/girls doubleheader, the Wolverines are now 11-8 overall and 10-2 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Wilmot remains a half game ahead of the Wolverines.
Still, Waterford head coach Dena Brechtl was pleased with her team’s effort against the Comets.
“It was just a good, overall game for us,” said Brechtl, who added that her squad was coming off a frustrating non-conference loss to Division 3 No. 2 East Troy last week.
“I think some of my seniors expected themselves to step up a little bit more,” Brechtl said. “It was hard to get them past that.
“We kept it really simple for Friday,” she added about the game plan – which was to pressure Delavan-Darien and run the floor. “The communication’s getting better.”
Megan Jensen led the Wolverines with 16 points, hitting “every wide-open shot that they gave her,” according to Brechtl.
But Kelly Strasser also stepped up, scoring 11 points and adding three steals and six rebounds.
“She was a leader,” Brechtl said.
Sophomore guard Jenna Bouffiou added 10 points and three assists, and 11 of the Waterford players scored in the contest.
“We got everybody in,” added Brechtl.
In Tuesday’s win over Union Grove, the Wolverines went on a 15-0 run in the second quarter to gain the halftime lead at 24-18.
Brechtl said the Wolverines didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, but responded to that by picking it up on defense.
“(The) press was great in the second and third quarters,” Brechtl said.
Jensen and Tiffany Stiewe each had 10 points to pace the Wolverines, while Strasser and Madison Blair both pitched in six.
