For the fourth time this season, the Waterford High School boys golf team took the top prize at Southern Lakes Conference golf major.
In the SLC golf major No. 4, played at Brown’s Lake Golf Course in Burlington Tuesday, the Wolverines dominated their SLC opponents. Waterford carded a team total 317 to finish 24 strokes ahead of second-place Wilmot. It was the Wolverines largest winning margin in the SLC golf majors this season.
The top three individual golfers were all Wolverines, with Garrett Buri winning medalist honors with a 78 on the par-72 course.
Zach Nash and Adam Dewane each carded 79s, along with four other golfers. Nash was second and Dewane third, based on tie-breaking criteria.
Grant Beck fired an 81 to finish off the team scoring, with David Zahn shooting an 85.
Merrill Hills Invitational
The Wolverine boys teed it up at the Merrill Hills Country Club for the Merrill Hills Invitational Monday and tied for fifth in the 22-team field.
Head coach Mike Harmeling said each player was just playing OK, but was not unhappy with the team finish.
“It was a difficult and competitive field,” Harmeling said.
Waukesha West won the meet carding a 319, with Waterford scoring a 334.
All five Wolverine golfers scored in the 80s, led by Zack Nash with an 82 on the par-72 course.
Adam Dewane, David Zahn and Grant Beck each carded 84s, with Garrett Buri shooting an 86.
Ashenfelter Invitational
On Saturday, Waterford was third at the Ashenfelter Invitional played at Riverside Golf Course in Janesville.
The Wolverines had a team score 328 in the 16-team event won by Edgerton with a 318.
“We had a good day,” Harmeling said. “Again the weather became a factor and it rained for about an hour and a half.”
Zahn fired a four-over 76, with Nash just one stroke back with a 77.
Buri shot an 87 and Beck an 88.
Each squad had only four golfers in this event.
Racine County Invite
Waterford won the 10-team Racine County Invite played at Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine May 2. The Wolverines shot a 345, with Racine Case coming in second with a 352.
Harmeling said conditions May 2 were very difficult with it being a cold and windy day.
“Scores were higher than expected,” Harmeling said. “We were able to put together a consistent effort.”
Beck, Buri and Dewane all shot 86s, with Nash carding an 87. Zahn had a 90.
SLC Golf Major No. 3
It was another windy day at the Southern Lakes Conference golf major No. 3 held at Twin Lakes Country Club April 30. It did not stop the Wolverine boys from winning another SLC golf major, though.
“We were fortunate that our No. 4 (Grant Beck) and No. 5 (Adam Dewane) golfers came in with some good scores,” Harmeling said.
Both Beck and Dewane led the team with 80s. That earned Beck a second-place individual finish, and Dewane a third place.
