Coming off an 11-2 win over Union Grove in Southern Lakes Conference play April 24, the Wolverines got to face the Broncos right away on Saturday – in the championship game of the Racine County Invite.
This time, the Wolverines couldn’t pick up enough timely hits and dropped the championship 2-1.
Where Waterford had 14 hits in the first game against the Broncos, the two teams combined for just nine in the second game.
Union Grove scored two runs in the third inning – which would end up holding up for the win. Waterford made a run at it in the sixth inning, and Alicia Barbian had an RBI, but the Wolverines couldn’t quite close the gap.
Maddie Szalewski was the hard-luck loser for the Wolverines, striking out five, walking none and allowing five hits.
To reach the championship game, Waterford downed Racine Park 12-4 in the semifinals. The Wolverines had 10 hits, including three RBI by Sara Terrian, and a 3-for-4 performance at the plate by Abbey Zortman.
Emily Brekke got the win on the mound for Waterford, going four innings with six strikeouts. Caitlyn Whitford got the save in relief.
In the opening round, Waterford defeated Racine Horlick 13-2 in seven innings. The Wolverines scored two runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Jenna Bouffiou and Alyssa Helwig each had three hits for Waterford, while Bouffiou, Zortman and Barbian all had doubles in the contest.
Szalewski picked up the win with five strikeouts and no walks.
In the April 24 game against Union Grove, the Broncos won 11-2.
Szalewski got the win on the mound, striking out eight and walking none.
Waterford also played Friday, defeating Delavan-Darien 12-1 in six innings.
Szalewski struck out 12 and walked none in the win.
On Tuesday, the Wolverines survived four errors against Wilmot and won 9-8 at home.
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to pull within a run before Szalewski closed out the game.
Terrian was 3-for-4 for the Wolverines, while Helwig hit a home run.
