Truth be told, an 0-2 record at the Baraboo Holiday Classic wasn’t without its positives for the Waterford Union High School girls basketball team.
The Wolverines dropped a 62-33 decision to Baraboo Dec. 27 – the fifth-ranked team in WIAA Division 2 – and then a 36-29 decision to Reedsburg the next day in a game head coach Dena Brechtl wanted back.
“I would love to play that game again,” said Brechtl of the Dec. 28 game against Reedsburg. “This was a game we should have won, but once again had trouble scoring.”
Baraboo won the tournament by destroying Richland Center 70-42.
If there was one complaint Brechtl had about the tournament, it was her team’s inability to score.
“I was very pleased with the defensive effort,” she said. “Offensively, we need to work out some kinks and get back to scoring.”
In the game against Baraboo, Brechtl said the opponent’s height – Baraboo starts four girls 5-10 or taller – and 2-1-2 zone kept Waterford from finishing many of its attempts.
“We did not play as strong as we needed to, in order to beat a very good basketball team,” she said.
Senior Megan Jensen led the Wolverines with 12 points, with four of those coming from the free-throw line. Jensen hit just five of 26 shot attempts.
Madison Blair added seven points and five rebounds.
Against Reedsburg, the Wolverines trailed by two at the half, and let Reedsburg get ahead by six after three quarters.
With both teams unable to get out of single-digit scoring in each quarter, that turned out to be the difference.
“We played some great defense and our intensity on that side of the floor was pretty good,” Brechtl said. “We just needed to execute offensively.”
She praised the effort of Jenna Bouffiou (six points) and Tiffany Stiewe (eight points). Kelly Strasser added six points, while Blair had seven rebounds.
Waterford was scheduled to play at Badger Thursday at 7 p.m. to kick off the second half of the season.
