In their first action this season, the Waterford High School boys golf team performed admirably. The team won its own Wolverine Classic held at Rivermoor Golf Club April 12.
Waterford bested all eight teams, carding a team score of 162 over nine holes. Burlington was second with a 170.
The event, which initially was scheduled for 18 holes with eight players from each team one week earlier, was shortened to nine holes and five golfers from each team.
“It was a good start to the season,” head coach Mike Harmeling said. “As a whole, all of the kids played well.”
All five of Waterford’s golfers placed in the top 10 with David Zahn the meet medalist with a 37 on the par-35 course. Zach Nash was third with a 39.
Garrett Buri (43), Andrew Schultz (43) and Grant Beck (43) were eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.
Only the top four scores counted toward the team total.
Zahn carded one birdie, one bogey, one double bogey and six pars on his round, while Nash had four bogeys and five pars.
“There is still room for improvement and the kids understand that we have some work to do,” Harmeling said.
SLC Boys Major No. 1
Waterford hosted the Southern Lakes Conference Boys Golf Major No. 1 on Tuesday at Rivermoor and came away with a second win this season.
The Wolverine boys dominated the event winning by 19 strokes over Burlington in the eight-team meet.
Waterford carded a 336, while Burlington turned in a 355.
Nash, and Burlington’s Brian Dankle, both shot an 80 on the 18-hole par-70 course, but Nash was awarded medalist honors based on tie-breaking criteria. Nash had a 41 on the front nine, and a 39 on the back.
The Wolverines’ next three golfers placed third, fourth and fifth to give Waterford four of the top five scores.
Zahn fired an 83 (43-40), Schultz an 86 (39-47) and Beck an 87 (46-41).
The fifth Waterford golfer was Garrett Buri. Buri, whose score did not count toward the team score, carded a 90 (46-44).
The Wolverine golfers will tee it up at the Milton Scramble on Saturday at Bonny Meade Golf Links.
Next week, they will participate in the SLC Boys Golf Major No. 2 at Delbrook Golf Course, Delavan, on Tuesday, April 23.
