The Waterford Union High School softball season opened its season Monday in impressive fashion, holding Catholic Central to just four hits in a 12-1 win.
The game had CCHS has the home team, and Waterford quickly scored four runs in the top of the first and another three in the second to pull out to a clear, early lead.
But while the Waterford bats connected for 12 hits off Catholic Central’s Makenzie Kyle, Waterford junior Maddie Szalewski had a huge game, finishing with 14 strikeouts and no walks.
“Maddie Szalewski came ready to play,” said Waterford coach Ellen Blair. “She shut down CC’s hitters and was focused and ready to go.”
Jenna Bouffiou – in her first varsity game – led Waterford with three hits and two RBI, and also had two stolen bases, while Abbey Zortman also had three hits. Megan Jensen had a triple, two hits and two RBI for the Wolverines.
Alicia Barbian was just 1-for-3, but had three RBI for the Wolverines.
On Tuesday at home against Delavan-Darien, Kelly Strasser had an over-the-fence solo home run, while Bouffiou had three hits – two of which were doubles – in a 7-2 Waterford win.
Sara Terrian added two hits for Waterford, while Barbian and Strasser finished with a hit apiece.
Szalewski finished the game with six strikeouts and two walks, and allowed two runs on six hits.
