After seeing five of its first seven games rescheduled due to weather, the Waterford High School baseball team got back into action Tuesday when it hosted Elkhorn in a doubleheader.

The Wolverines lost the first game 4-2, but came back to take a 5-1 lead in the second game that was called after 4-1/2 innings due to darkness.

Head coach Lance Bestland indicated the second game was postponed to a later date, and may not be completed.

The two teams tried to get a doubleheader in, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m., because rain was forecasted for Thursday when the two teams were to meet again.

In the opener, Waterford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and held that until the top of the fourth when Elkhorn plated two runs for a 2-1 lead.

The Wolverine boys tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. When neither team scored in the seventh, the teams went to extra innings, with Elkhorn scoring two unearned runs in the top of the eighth off two Waterford errors..

Waterford outhit Elkhorn 8-6 in this game, but the two errors cost them.

Dylan Malecki pitched all eight innings and took loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out 17 in an excellent effort on the mound.

“He threw a heck of a game,” Bestland said. “Our defense let him down.”

In game two, Waterford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Although Elkhorn got one run in the bottom of the second, the Wolverines tacked on two more runs in the third on their way to the 5-1 lead.

Zach Keller went 2-for-3 in this game, with a couple of RBIs. Jesse Bouffiou had a triple and two RBIs.

When the game was halted, Waterford had outhit Elkhorn 6-2, with both teams committing one error.

The Wolverines hosted Indian Trail Academy on Wednesday in non-conference action.

With all the postponements the past few weeks due to weather, Waterford is scheduled to play five games in seven days.

On Saturday they will be at Westosha Central for an SLC matchup rescheduled from April 11.
