Going into the Southern Lakes Conference Meet Tuesday as the favorite, the Waterford High School boys golf team lived up to expectations, winning the SLC Meet with a 326 score. It was the third year in a row that Waterford has won the SLC title.
Played at Hawk’s View Golf Course, Lake Geneva, the Wolverines were 10 strokes better than second-place Burlington.
The top four Waterford golfers all finished in the top eight, with Zach Nash, Garrett Buri and Matt Puetz finishing second, third and fourth.
Burlington’s Brian Dankle was the meet medalist with a 79 on the par-72 course.
Nash and Buri each carded 80s, while Puetz shot an 82.
Adam Dewane finished eighth overall, firing an 84.
The fifth Wolverine, Grant Beck, carded an 88.
Only the four lowest scores count toward the team total.
Brown’s Lake Rider Cup
A second-place finish behind Burlington at the Brown’s Lake Rider Cup was the final tune-up for the Wolverine boys prior to the SLC Meet Tuesday.
Waterford ended with a 232 team total, four strokes behind Burlington in the 10-team event.
“The Brown’s Lake event is a unique event,” head coach Mike Harmeling noted. “The teams play six holes of a scramble, six holes of best ball, and six holes of modified alternate shot. It is a fun format and the kids really enjoy playing it.”
Grant Beck and Matt Puetz teamed up to card a 74 on the par-72 course. That was good enough for third place. The twosome had an eagle on the par-5 fifth.
Garrett Buri and Sam Heitl paired up for a 76. The third Wolverine team was Adam Dewane and Andrew Schultz. They fired an 82.
WIAA regional action gets underway next week with Waterford competing in the Waukesha West regional at Morningstar Golf Course in Waukesha on Wednesday, May 22.
