If Union Grove boys coach Eric Swanson could fix one aspect of his team’s game right now, it would be the squad’s short game.
The infamous short game, which can cripple anyone’s score card, has taken its toll on the Bronco golfers of late, including the Southern Lakes Conference mini meet at Twin Lakes Country Club Tuesday, April 28.
The Broncos finished sixth out of the eight Southern Lakes Conference participants with a 373. Lake Geneva Badger won the event with a team score of 324.
“Our approach shots and short game are just not where they need to be for us to be successful as a team right now,” Union Grove golf coach Eric Swanson said. “They all have the ability, but they just haven’t found a way to put it all together.”
One Bronco that could be on the verge of putting it all together junior is Sam Maier, who finished 10th in the individual scores with an 85.
Maier who finished his opening nine holes with a 44, improved his play on the final 9 holes with a 41.
“Sam played well again in this one,” Swanson said. “Hopefully some of the others will soon follow with improved play.”
Sophomore Eric Chambers finished second on the team with a 92, while Justin Schuster shot a 97, and Ben Maier and Karsten Acker each shot a 99 to round out the Bronco golfers.
“We just have not been able to put together a solid round from all five guys,” Swanson said.
Union Grove looks to have more balanced scoring Saturday when it participates in the Brown’s Lake Rider Cup tournament. The Broncos will play the Brown’s Lake course a second consecutive time on Tuesday when they play in the Southern Lakes Conference major, the fourth of the season.
“Hopefully we can break out of our struggles soon,” Swanson said. “We’ve got some big weeks coming up with our county tournament and the final two conference majors.”
