DELAVAN – Burlington junior Andrew Ohm picked the perfect time to hit his first 3-pointer of the season.
On Friday night late in the game at Delavan-Darien High School, the left-handed reserve guard caught a chest pass and calmly sank a triple, pushing the Demons past the century mark for their 101st point. The large Burlington student section jumped in excitement, and the entire back row busted out cell phones to capture the moment.
After trailing in the second quarter by as many as seven points, Burlington stormed back with a fury to secure a 101-79 victory and score the second-most points in school history.
The Demons just missed the school record of 102 points, which was set in 1965. It was the first 100-point game in Burlington coach Steve Berezowitz’s 20-year career.
Burlington improved to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference. The Demons are tied atop the conference with Waterford, which beat Westosha Central Friday, 87-79.
A combination of porous Comet defense and quick-paced, lights-out shooting helped Burlington close the game on a 76-48 run after trailing midway through the second quarter.
Burlington held a 45-42 lead at the half, but continued hot shooting and aggressive, attacking offense built the lead to 80-62 after three quarters. Eric Johnson’s 35-foot triple at the third-quarter buzzer was indicative of what kind of night it was for the Demons.
Everything was falling, and everyone got into the act.
Junior Mitch Klug led the way with 28 points, including a four-point play and five 3-pointers. It was the guard’s second straight 20-point performance.
Three other Demons scored in double figures, spearheaded by Frankie Hozeska’s 15. Hozeska also paced the team with nine rebounds. Nick Klug added 12 points, and Nathaniel Sibley had 11.
In all, 12 Demons entered the scoring column.
Burlington knocked down an eye-popping 30 two-point buckets and nine triples. The Demons were also 14-for-23 from the line.
Brad Burling added six rebounds, and Sibley and Ty Wiemer each added five.
Burlington returns home Tuesday to face nonconference foe Mukwonago (5-5).
Waterford 87, Westosha Central 79
The visiting Wolverines broke open a five-point halftime lead with a 24-14 third quarter to pull away in Paddock Lake.
It was the sixth straight win for Waterford (8-3).
Chris Saltzmann went off for 28 points, including five 3-pointers.
Trace Hunsucker added 18 points, Ross Gunderson had 14 with three triples and Collin Chart tallied 12 points.
The Wolverines lit it up with 10 3-pointers and got to the line with ease, connecting on 25 of 41 foul shots.
Waterford now has a week off before traveling to Lake Geneva Badger (5-2, 3-1 SLC) next Friday.
