The Catholic Central High School softball team did itself no favors May 2 in its final game of the 29th annual Poynette Jamboree, and missed a chance at finishing the tournament undefeated.
The Poynette Jamboree is one of Wisconsin’s largest high school softball tournaments.
Catholic Central (10-3, 7-0 Metro Classic) committed five errors, surrendered five walks and left nine runners in scoring position in a 7-3 loss to Mineral Point.
“We were our worst enemies,” Hilltoppers coach Bill Greskiw said. “It was a bit disappointing after a well-played game against Highland.”
Catholic Central beat Highland 4-0 May 2 and Dodgeland 16-0 May 1 earlier in the jamboree.
The Hilltoppers dismantled Deerfield (9-3) 19-0 Monday in a non-conference game at home
The Hilltoppers beat Kenosha St. Joseph (0-5 Metro Classic) 18-2 April 30 in a Metro Classic game at Kenosha St. Joseph and beat Martin Luther (4-3, 2-3 Metro Classic) 13-0 April 28 in a Metro Classic game in Greenfield.
Against Mineral Point (7-2), Catholic Central tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the fourth inning. Mineral Point scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning and won.
Taylor Rieck finished with three hits. Katie Kubiak and Mackenzie Kyle each tallied two. Maddy Vos drove in two runs.
The Hilltoppers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Highland (8-5). Kubiak finished with three hits and Kacie Snyder, Sydney Robinson, Bridgette Wright and Haile Weis each drove in a run.
Kyle threw a complete game and struck out five.
Snyder powered the Hilltoppers past Dodgeland. Snyder finished 4-for-5 with a double, two triples, three runs scored and four RBI. Catholic Central scored eight runs in both fifth and sixth innings against Dodgeland (4-6).
Baseball drops two
The Catholic Central High School baseball team dropped a pair of games to Metro Classic foe Shoreland Lutheran last week.
The Hilltoppers lost 8-7 April 30 at Burlington’s Beaumont Field and 5-2 April 28 at Shoreland Lutheran in Somers.
Shoreland (7-6, 5-1 Metro Classic) tied the April 30 game 5-5 in the top of the sixth and took an 8-5 lead in the seventh. Catholic Central rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Ben Heiligenthal, Jacob Webley, Austin Hayes, and Nolan Girard each finished with two hits for the Hilltoppers. Jobe Wagner drove in two runs. Catholic Central’s Kross Krueger threw a complete game in the loss.
The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the top of the sixth in the April 28 meeting and cut their deficit to 4-2. Shoreland posted an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Shoreland pitcher Trey Johnson limited Catholic Central to one hit and threw a complete game. Girard threw a complete game in the loss and finished with the Hilltoppers’ lone hit.
Stemper leads golfers
Jeff Stemper of the Catholic Central High School golf team shot a 38 April 29 on the front nine at Bristol Oaks Country Club and won individual medalist honors at the third Metro Classic Mini Meet of the season.
Stemper, a senior, recently committed to play golf on scholarship next season at UW-Green Bay.
Stemper led the Hilltoppers to a fifth-place finish with a four-man team total of 192 strokes. Martin Luther won the team title (171).
Catholic Central’s Sean Kramer shot a 48 and finished 20th. Bryce Hocking and John Pum each finished with a 53 and Jack DeSmidt carded a 56.
Racine Lutheran finished third (175), Racine St. Catherine’s fourth (177) and Thomas More sixth (196). Kenosha St. Joseph finished seventh (205), Shoreland Lutheran eighth (211) and Whitefish Bay Dominican ninth (217).
Catholic Central competed in the season’s fourth Metro Classic Mini Meet Wednesday at Oakwood Golf Course in Milwaukee.
Track squad competes
Catholic Central’s Lauren Reesman won two events April 30 in the Racine County Track & Field Invitational at Union Grove High School.
Reesman won the 100-meter wheelchair race in 33.84 seconds and the wheelchair shot put competition with a throw of 13 feet, one inch.
Reesman’s points gave the Hilltoppers the wheelchair team title with a total of 20 points. The boys finished 10th with a team total of 23.5 points and the girls tied for ninth with 22 points.
The girls’ 4×100 relay of Monica Litman, Kelly Aldrich, Laura Klein and Brianna Martin finished third (52.71). The same runners also finished third in the 4 X 200 relay (1:52.13).Cassie Reesman finished fifth (1:04.89) and Kathleen Straube sixth (1:05.17) in the 400.
Hertel Novasic finished fourth in the 800 for the boys (2:02.72). Sam Joski finished fourth in the 1,600 (4:47.40) and Christian Nicholls finished sixth in the 200 (23.88).
In the team standings, Racine Park won the boys meet (150) and Racine Horlick won the girls meet (139).
