The Waterford Union High School girls basketball team won its third straight WIAA Division 2 regional title with a 47-46 overtime victory Feb. 29 against visiting Jefferson.
The Wolverines (16-8), seeded third in their postseason bracket, played fourth-seeded Waukesha West (12-12) in a sectional semifinal Thursday at Elkhorn Area High School.
The winner will play either No. 1 seed De Forest or No. 2 seed Oregon Saturday at Janesville Craig High School for a berth in the Division 2 state tournament.
Meanwhile, as for the Feb. 29 regional final, Wolverines coach Dena Brechtl praised Katie Rohner, Annie Benavides and Raelynn Barwick for their strong play in overtime.
Brechtl said Waterford took a one-point lead late in regulation and Jefferson held the ball for a final shot that was not successful.
“The first half was one of our best,” Brechtl said. “Things were clicking. The ball moved on offense and we got some great looks and on defense, we stuck to our plan and made great rotations when needed.”
Waterford led 26-16 at halftime.
“After halftime we discussed some offensive improvements,” Brechtl said. “We started the half with some great opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize on them.
“Just when our lead started getting larger, we would struggle to execute and then they would climb back in.”
Jefferson (13-12) outscored Waterford 22-12 in the second half. Rohner led Waterford with 22 points, and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Benavides finished with 14 rebounds and five points. Mackenzie Stewie finished with 11 rebounds.
Meghan Schmidt finished with four steals, and earned praise from Brechtl for her effort on defense.
