With nothing to play for but pride at this point, the Burlington High School football team made sure it left Elkhorn Friday feeling better about the way it played.
The Demons scored the first 14 points of the game, and picked up a 42-21 win over the Elks.
Burlington improved to 2-4 in the Southern Lakes Conference with the win, and 3-5 overall. A loss last week to Wilmot ended the Demons’ shot at the playoffs, but coach Hans Block was still encouraged by what he saw at Elkhorn.
“Overall, I thought we played pretty well,” Block said. “We got just about everyone into the game.
“We got up early, which is something we haven’t done much.”
Burlington picked off Elkhorn quarterback Chris Fryman less than a minute and a half into the game, which Lucas Winkler returned 44 yards for a touchdown.
Burlington then recovered an onside kick following the score, which turned into another score when Chad Redmer ran in from four yards out. A two-point conversion pass from Jayden Essman to Garrett Riggs gave BHS a 14-0 lead.
The Demons end their season at home Friday night by hosting Union Grove.
“They’re a little bit scary,” Block said. “They are progressing. They are getting better.
“While their record may not be outstanding, they’re improving week to week,” the coach added. “I think it should be another close game.”
Block indicated that his team would have to mix both the pass and the run, and be ready for several different formations.
“We’ve got a couple of things we’re working on,” he said. “We’ll see what we get.”
