After a pair of non-conference losses last week, the Burlington High School boys basketball team needed a dose of confidence Tuesday night at home against Wilmot.
The Demons got it, outscoring the Panthers 21-11 in the second quarter and then coming home with a 70-59 victory.
Burlington improved to 5-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference and 5-4 overall with the victory.
“We needed it,” said BHS coach Steve Berezowitz. “Not to say it’s a must-win halfway through the season.”
Still, while Berezowitz was pleased with the progress his team has made, he wanted more.
“We have to do a better job of trying to eliminate our mistakes,” the coach said.
The Demons got a balanced scoring attack, with four players in double figures. Carson Biedrzycki led the way with 18 points – hitting three of five 3-pointers – while Tim Peterson and Eric Gerber added 16 points each. Trent Taylor pitched in 10.
“We’ve got to have balance,” Berezowitz said. “We did a good job of moving the ball.”
The Demons also got a balanced effort on the boards. Gerber finished with 13, but Biedrzycki added eight, Peterson seven and Taylor, Jimmy Penzel and Zach Oldenburg three each.
“I think we did a great job off the boards,” said Berezowitz, who guessed that the Demons had double the amount of rebounds Wilmot had. “You’re going to win ball games if you rebound like that.”
BHS was coming off a 67-61 loss to Racine Case at Carthage College Saturday. Case pulled away with a 22-14 third quarter for the victory.
Peterson finished with 21 points to lead Burlington, while Biedrzycki added 14 and Gerber 12.
