Solid performances across the various events led the Burlington High School track and field squads to top-three finishes at the Southern Lakes Conference Relays held Monday at Delavan-Darien.

The Demon boys finished second with 76 points, while the girls were third with 83.

“Most definitely happy with a second-place performance,” boys head coach Trent Tonn said.

“I felt like we were right in it,” girls head coach Dan Luneau said.

Waterford won the boys side of the relays with 122 points, and also won the girls side with 108 points.

In this event, each team entered three or fourth athletes in each event, with the total of the three athletes’ results making the team total for that event.

The meet was called before all events could be completed due to numerous delays throughout the evening and an inability to get the track lights to turn on. A total of four events were not finished.

The Demon boys won two events – the triple jump and the pole vault relays.

In the triple jump relay, Max Shenkenberg and Ross Canales finished 1-2, with Cody Mather taking seventh.

In the pole vault relay, Garrett Riggs won the event clearing 13 feet, with Logan Jorgenson coming in fifth and Brady Wincapaw ninth.

Jorgenson cleared 10 feet six inches, which Tonn believes is a personal record.

“That was awesome,” Tonn said. “He’s having a good year as a freshman.”

The Burlington boys also finished second in the 4×800-meter relay, and the 800 sprint medley.

Tonn said the team was in line to score more points in the 4×200 relay but made a baton exchange outside the exchange area and were disqualified.

The Demon girls also won two events – the discus throw relay and the triple jump relay.

“All the events were tough with the wind,” girls head coach Dan Luneau said.

In the discus, Shelby Trongeau placed second, Kaysie Shebeneck fourth and Cassie Neil 10th.

In the triple jump, Meagan Hegeman won it with a leap of 32-06, with Jasmine Kawalec placing fourth and Molly Benavides seventh.

Concerning Hegeman, Luneau said, “She’s capable of more, but with those conditions, I was really happy.”

The Demon girls were second in the 4×800, the 800 sprint medley, and the long jump relay.

The girls figured to score more points in the pole vault relay with state qualifier Audra Weis competing. That, though, was one of the four events not completed.

The Demon girls took third and the boys fourth in the 12-school Tom Burger Invitational held Saturday at Milwaukee Lutheran High School.

Freshman Skylar VanDusseldorp was the only Demon on either squad to get a win, clearing 5-10 in the boys’ high jump.

Max Shenkenberg finished second in the triple jump.

Another Demon boy who performed well was Matt Gierhan. Gierhan was third in the 400, fifth in the 200 and fifth in the high jump.

Andrew Gauger was third in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

Finn Finucane placed fourth in the 1,600.

The Demon girls’ best finish came from Hannah Wills, who took second in the long jump, and the 4×800-meter relay team which also finished second. That team was comprised of Ellen Stang, Sophie Grandi, Coriann Dorgay and Caitlin Yonash.

“Hannah’s still jumping pretty solid,” Luneau said.

With third-place finishes were Michelle Kleitsch in the 1,600, and Hegeman in the triple jump.

Finishing fourth were Stang in the high jump, Kawalec in the triple jump, and Katie Sorensen in the 100-meter hurdles.
