While the Burlington High School boys basketball team may still be figuring out where all the pieces of the puzzle go, those pieces showed they could score Tuesday night in the season opener.
The Demons scored more than 20 points in two of the four quarters at Kenosha Bradford, and cruised home to a 79-61 win over the Red Devils.
BHS is 1-0, marking the second time in three seasons the Demons won their season opener.
“It was good, a good starting point,” said BHS head coach Steve Berezowitz. “We know we have some things we need to improve on.”
Berezowitz said Bradford is known for its pressure defense and athleticism, and his team responded.
“I like playing teams like that right away,” the coach explained.
BHS finished with three players in double figures, but none was bigger than senior Carson Biedrzycki, who got a late start to his basketball season because of the Demons’ run to the state boys volleyball tournament.
Biedrzycki finished with 33 points and 19 rebounds in what Berezowitz said was a highly efficient effort.
“He’s a kid who works pretty hard in his game,” the coach explained. “We did a good job of getting him the ball. He didn’t force things.”
Biedrzycki hit 10 baskets and hit 13 of 15 free throws. He also had five assists.
“That’s a pretty efficient game,” Berezowitz said.
Jake Reetz added 12 points in spite of being in early foul trouble, while Ty Dennis pitched in 11.
Berezowitz also praised the play of Jayden Essman, who scored just two points but was forced into a guard role because of Reetz’s foul trouble.
“We got good minutes from our bench and good minutes from various people,” Berezowitz explained.
Burlington will play at Milwaukee South Division as part of the Terry Porter Classic. Tipoff is 4:15 p.m.
