Burlington High School boys’ basketball coach Steve Berezowitz didn’t mince words after a 53-45 loss to Mukwonago at home Tuesday night.
“I didn’t think we had the effort that we needed to compete in every area,” the coach explained. “What’s frustrating is I thought we did a pretty good job last Friday.
“I didn’t think we seized the opportunity (Tuesday).”
The Demons were coming off a 64-48 win over Verona at home Friday night, and the Indians were just .500 coming into the contest.
However, Mukwonago led by 13 at the half and by 17 after three quarters. BHS trailed 53-36 before scoring the final nine points of the contest.
“I know we got outscored, I know we got outhustled, I know we got outcoached,” Berezowitz said. “Those three? Usually a recipe for disaster.”
Carson Biedrzycki led the Demons with 11 points, while Eric Gerber and Dexter Spieker added eight points each and Trent Taylor seven.
Mukwonago had three players in double figures – Nathan Tanquay with 18 points and Aaron Nixon and Dominic Cizauskas with 14 each.
Against Verona, the Demons led by two after the opening quarter and extended their lead in each of the following three stanzas.
“We made strides,” Berezowitz said. “We made some very positive strides.
“I thought we took a couple of steps back (Tuesday).”
BHS had just two players in double figures – Gerber with 14 and Tim Peterson with 12 – but another seven players scored in the contest.
Ty Dennis and Biedrzycki added eight points each, while Alex Oldenburg had six and Jimmy Penzel and Spieker five each.
In light of the loss to Mukwonago, Berezowitz simply said it was back to the drawing board.
“We see if we can get better tomorrow,” the coach explained.
