Over much of this season, the Burlington High School girls basketball team has had a difficult time scoring points. The result is a losing streak that has extended to nine games.
During that nine-game span, 50 percent of the time the Demon girls have scored in single digits per quarter.
In a 51-37 loss to Union Grove Friday, the Demons scored in single digits in three of the four quarters.
“We’re having trouble scoring points,” noted head coach Gordon Nikolic. “We don’t have a go-to player. We’re stilling searching for one.”
Burlington trailed 11-9 after one quarter and still was reasonably close – 22-14 – at the half.
“We played some pretty good defense,” Nikolic said. “We played with them for a half.”
The third quarter was a different story, though, as the Broncos outscored the Demons 17-8 to take a commanding 39-22 lead into the final eight minutes.
Union Grove had three players in double figures, while Burlington had none. The Demons top scorer was Emily Golon with seven points.
Golon has been Burlington’s leading scorer this season, averaging 11.7 points per game. But Nikolic noted that teams are focusing on Golon, and the Demons have no one else to pick up the scoring slack.
One potential scorer is freshman Teagan Taylor, who had six points in the Union Grove game.
“She’s starting to pick up the pace,” Nikolic said. “She’s one who we think can score 10 points a game.”
