The Burlington High School girls basketball team kicked off its season at Hartford Tuesday and were dealt a 49-40 loss.
“It was a decent start (to our season),” head coach Gordon Nikolic said.
The Demon girls led 11-7 in the first quarter, but Hartford scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 12-11 lead they would never relinquish.
Burlington trailed 24-19 at the half, and 33-25 after three quarters.
Although Burlington outscored Hartford from the floor, Hartford made 11 more free throws. Hartford was 17 of 28 from the foul line, while the Demons were just 6 of 15.
Senior guard Jennifer Stevens led Burlington with 11 points, and was the only Demon in double figures.
