The struggles of the Burlington High School girls’ basketball team continued Friday in a 64-44 loss to Waterford at home.
Head coach Gordon Nikolic said his team keeps making the same mistakes.
“We have to start correcting those things,” Nikolic noted if the team is to get back into the win column after 14 consecutive losses.
“We’re just not consistent,” Nikolic added. “We’re still trying to put together a whole game.”
Slows starts have been typical for the 2-15 squad this season. It was no different against Waterford, as the Demons fell behind 18-8 after one quarter.
The girls played a much better second quarter, yet still trailed by 10 at the half.
A 17-13 deficit in the third quarter had the Demons trailing 50-36 going into the final eight minutes.
Nikolic noted the team had chances to get the deficit down to six points, but would then commit a turnover or miss an easy shot.
“It just came down to making shots,” he said. “It’s hard for us to come back when we get down.”
The sole bright spot for the Demon girls was the continued strong play by junior guard Emily Golon. Golon was the game’s high scorer with 19 points, but had little help from her teammates.
Burlington got to the free throw line 22 times, and made 12, but had only 13 field goals in the game.
Waterford had four players in double figures, led by Stephanie Rank with 16.
The loss dropped Burlington to 0-9 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Burlington will travel to Wilmot today to take on the 11-3 Panthers.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Demons will host Delavan-Darien.
Both games are SLC matchups and begin at 7 p.m.
