A 68-4 win over Union Grove Thursday provided the Burlington High School wrestling team with an undefeated Southern Lakes Conference dual season.
The seventh-ranked Demon boys finished 7-0 in the SLC going into the conference meet Saturday, Feb. 4, at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.
This is the third year in a row that Burlington has won the dual portion of the SLC season. In each of the past two years, they placed second in the tournament and shared the overall conference crown.
“It would be nice not to share it this year,” head coach Jade Gribble said.
Gribble believes the conference meet will be very competitive as the SLC has many excellent wrestlers.
A total of 32 SLC wrestlers are ranked in either Division 1 or Division 2.
At 152 pounds, five wrestlers are ranked. At 145 and 106, four are ranked.
Every weight class has at least one ranked wrestler, with nine weight classes having two or more. Burlington has seven wrestlers in the rankings.
“That’s by far the most we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Gribble said.
“There are definitely going to be some great matches,” Gribble added. “It’s going to be fun to come and watch.”
Against Union Grove, the Demons lost just one match. In the 13 wins, they had eight pins, one technical fall, three decisions and a forfeit.
“It was a team effort,” Gribble said. “It was a nice way to finish the conference dual meet season.”
