The Burlington High School boys tennis team evened their record at 3-3 overall and improved to 3-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 5-2 win over Lake Geneva Badger Tuesday.
“The team played well against a good team,” head coach Ken Savaglia said.
The Demon boys got wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles, and at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
“Again it came down to 2 and 3 singles,” Savaglia said. “Conor (Schultz) pulled it out in three (sets). Brenden (Novak) came back from the Waterford loss to take it to (Kasey Lofy).”
Schultz won the first set 6-2, lost the second set by the identical score, and then pulled out the third set 6-3.
Novak won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Caleb Hewitt won easily at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Alex Oldenberg and Matt Traber won 6-2, 6-2; while at No. 3 doubles Colin Carville and Jon Martin won by an identical score.
“Going to re-evaluate (No.) 1 singles and (No.) 1 doubles and switch guys,” Savaglia added.
This was a match that Savaglia expected to win, but in the end it was another loss for his squad April 26 at Waterford.
In this SLC matchup at Waterford, the Wolverines edged the Demons 4-3, winning three of four singles matches, and one doubles match.
“It was one of those losses I didn’t expect to happen,” Savaglia said. “They matched up well against us.”
Burlington got a win at No. 4 singles when Hewitt won 6-2, 6-3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Corey Caldwell and Sam Greening won 6-3, 6-4, and the No. 2 doubles team of Oldenburg and Traber were victorious 6-3, 6-4.
The No. 3 doubles team of Carville and Martin lost 6-4, 6-3.
In singles action, Andrew Schmidt lost 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1; Schultz lost 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 at No. 2; and Novak lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.
