It was a disappointing way to begin the 2012 spring softball season for the Burlington High School girls’ team. The Demon girls traveled to Paddock Lake Thursday to take on Southern Lakes Conference foe Westosha Central and were handed an 18-0 drubbing at the hands of the Falcons.
Falcons pitcher Sarah Fonk no-hit the Demons, while her teammates pounded out 19 hits against two Burlington pitchers in the game called after four innings.
Westosha scored three runs in the first, four in the second, six in the third and five more in the fourth.
First-year head coach Gary Caliva noted that he has only two players at the same position as last year. Those are pitcher Riley Hornickle and senior first-baseman Cassidy Robers.
“We are a fairly young team and with so many new starters I think that it will take us a little while to gel as a team,” Caliva said. “With hard work, we expect to improve every week.”
Hornickle, a junior in her second year as a starting pitcher, was rocked for 12 runs (nine earned) and 14 hits. She walked just one and did not strike out a batter.
Junior Sarah Gannon pitched the fourth, giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits.
Not only was Burlington unsuccessful getting any offense going, defensively the girls committed six errors.
