Burlington girls tennis coach Rose Dolatowski knew her squad had a chance at team state.
During Wednesday’s Division I Lake Geneva Badger Sectional, she said her squad had a commanding lead on Monona Grove and seemed well on its way to school history. Ever the humble coach, Dolatowski stayed mum, though, and didn’t want to jinx it.
The Demons allowed Dolatowski to breathe a sigh of relief as they cruised to the team victory.
Behind a No. 2 doubles championship from Lydia Crabtree and Sierra Koenen along with Lacey Londre (1 singles) and Olivia Leuck and Alli Zeman (1 doubles) qualifying individually, Burlington totaled 38 points.
“I didn’t believe it until it was all over,” Dolatowski told the Racine Journal-Times. “We struggled at the conference meet … but we did so well in the sub sectional, I thought we were in good position to do it.”
Burlington finished 12 points ahead of runner-up Badger and 14 in front of third-place Waterford.
Crabtree and Koenen (28-2) downed Waterford’s Lauren Sikora and Katie Queram in the title match.
Leuck and Zeman (22-9) took third at No. 1 doubles with wins over Monona Grove and Milton.
Waterford’s No. 1 doubles team of Bridget Brockmann and Alyssa Schimelfenyg also qualified for state.
For Union Grove, which competed at the Racine Horlick Sectional, Jessica DeGroot made state at No. 1 singles. She took third place.
