The Burlington Combined girls’ swimming team finished second Nov. 2 in the Southern Lakes Conference swimming meet at Whitewater High School.
The Demons’ finish comes as no surprise whatsoever to coach Denita Jones.
“I figured that’s exactly where we would be,” Jones said.
Burlington Combined finished with 446 points. Lake Geneva won the conference title with 488.
Elkhorn finished third (333) and Whitewater finished fourth (268). Platteville/Lancaster finished fifth (246), Jefferson/Cambridge sixth (189), Edgerton/Evansville seventh (144) and Delavan-Darien eighth (51).
“It was a lot closer than I thought,” Jones said. “Badger’s just a really good team. I didn’t think we would be that close.”
Jones said “really good swims, all-around, by all of the swimmers,” led Burlington Combined to its lofty finish.
Jones also said the Demons’ “B” Relays were seeded high enough, and finished high enough, to also gain considerable points.
Sara Wanasek won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 59 seconds and the 500 freestyle (5:24).
Wanasek and Ellie Petrie, Olivia Wanasek and DeAnn Jones finished second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45). Samantha Dziak, DeAnn Jones, Kaley Brown and Paytin Kennicott finished third in the 200 medley relay (2:00).
The 400 freestyle relay of Sara and Olivia Wanasek, Petrie and Brown finished third (3:51).
Petrie finished fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:03) and shaved more than second off her previous personal best time. Dziak finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:04) and dropped more than two seconds off her previous personal best.
Kristen Goetzke finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:43) and dropped six seconds from her previous personal best.
Goetzke finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:08) and dropped two seconds off her previous personal best.
Denita Jones said Rose Lambrecht also dropped considerable time and set personal best in two of her events, specifically the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Lambrecht finished eighth in the individual medley (2:27) and 12th in the butterfly (1:08).
The Demons compete Saturday in the Greenfield Sectional at Greenfield High School for berths in the WIAA Division 1 State Swimming and Diving meet. The winner at every sectional in every event advances to state, as do the next 18 fastest individuals/relay teams from throughout the state.
“It’s a competitive sectional and, of course, we have Badger there,” Denita Jones said. “They always do well at their meets. I think that’s our biggest competition.”
The state meet is Nov. 15 and 16 at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison.
