It got close at the end, but there is no doubt that the Burlington High School girls tennis team is this season’s best in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Burlington won the SLC Tournament Sept. 27 at Westosha Central High School. The Demons won their last SLC title in girls tennis in 2010.

Play started Sept. 25 and concluded Sept. 27. Westosha Central played host to the singles matches and Wilmot played host to the doubles matches. Westosha Central played host to all finals matches.

The Demons scored 27 points and unseated three-time defending champion Union Grove.

Badger finished second (25), Union Grove third (18) and Waterford and Westosha Central tied for fourth (16). Wilmot finished sixth (8), Elkhorn seventh (4) and Delavan-Darien eighth (0).

The final standings include points from the dual meet season and conference tournament. Burlington scored 13 points in the SLC Tournament and 14 points for finishing undefeated (7-0) in SLC dual meet competition.

The Demons played for titles in four flights and won three championships.

Burlington’s Sophie Grandi beat Westosha’s Katrina Bostanche for the title at No. 2 singles. Grandi won the first set 6-2, Bostanche won the second set 6-0 and Grandi won the third set 6-1.

Burlington’s Emily Crabtree defeated Badger’s Ashlee Polena 6-0, 6-2 in the championship at No. 4 singles.

Burlington’s Whitney Miller and Katie Daujoter beat Badger’s Gia Danna and Olivia Stout 6-4, 6-3 in the championship at No. 3 doubles.

Miller and Daujoter, seeded third, beat the second seed in their first match before dropping the top-seeded Danna and Stout.

“They have improved significantly since they played that team in the first match of the season,” Demons’ coach Rose Dolatowsi said.

Dolatowski complimented Crabtree’s play. Crabtree was seeded first in her flight, as was Grandi.

“Emily just played great tennis,” Dolatowski said. “They all played very smart tennis, very good tennis.”

Burlington’s Lydia Crabtree and Hannah Cook at No. 1 doubles finished second after getting upset in the final by Badger’s Andrea Chironis and Joan Williams 6-1, 6-0. Lydia Crabtree and Cook were the top seed.

At No. 1 singles, Burlington’s Lacey Londre finished fourth, losing 7-5, 6-2 to Waterford’s Bridget Brockman in the third-place match.

Coral Miller finished fourth at No. 3 singles. Miller lost to Badger’s Kaity Theisz 6-1, 6-0 in the third-place match.

Amy Gilanyi and Alyssa Caliva at No. 2 doubles finished fifth, beating Elkhorn’s Kendal Gustisha and Hailey Wang 7-5, 6-0 in the fifth-place match.

The Demons played Waukesha South Tuesday in a non-conference dual meet at the Woyahn Complex in Waukesha.

The Demons compete Oct. 6 in a WIAA Division 1Subsectional Meet at Burlington High School. Players who reach the semifinals at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and those who reach the semifinals in the remaining flights advance to the WIAA Division 1 Sectional Meet Oct. 8 at Burlington.

The Demons are the defending sectional champions, and advanced to the WIAA Division 1 State Tennis Team Championships last season for the first time in program history.

“They’re excited, hoping that maybe they’re going to repeat as sectional champions,” Dolatowski said.
