Using a strong passing game and even better serving, the Burlington High School girls volleyball team cruised to a 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 win over Manitowoc Lincoln Thursday in the WIAA Division 1 state quarterfinals.
Burlington will play Muskego – a five-set winner over DeForest – in the state semifinals Friday night at 7 p.m.
A kill by middle hitter gave the Demons the match. Lincoln had just one lead in the match – at 1-0 in the third set following a Burlington error.
Statistics provided by Burlington co-coach Teri Leach show outside hitter Quinn Spieker with a team-best 18 kills, but Lewis added seven, Alyssa Turzenski six, Ali Rueter and Phoebe Hozeska five each and four for Leah Hofer. Rueter had 23 assists and eight digs, while Reba Thomsen had 14 assists and libero Teagan Taylor 18 digs. Robyn Robers pitched in 13 digs as well.
Burlington had just four aces, but kept Lincoln out of rhythm the entire match with strong serving, forcing several serve receive errors. Lincoln had five official serve receive errors, and struggled with passing the entire match.
“(We) came out hot and put pressure with our serve,” said Leach. “(I) thought we disrupted their offense with tough serving.”
Meg Wolowicz led Lincoln with six kills.
