While other area girls soccer teams have made an impact this year with Division 1 players and surprise turnarounds, there’s one constant in the Southern Lakes Conference – senior forward Merin Mundt.
Burlington High School hasn’t been defeated in conference play since 2014, and Mundt is a major reason why.
This season, she has five hat tricks, including games of four goals.
She scored four goals on May 17 and followed it up with four more May 19 in a 10-0 shellacking of Delavan-Darien.
The Lady Demons are 10-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the SLC. They are the No. 1 seed in this week’s SLC tournament and will host Waterford at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Mundt, who will play Division 1 college soccer at Iowa State University in the fall, has 27 goals this season.
The senior, who was offered a spot with the Cyclones as a sophomore, is 12th in the state with 62 points and 12th in goals with 27.
In club play, Mundt has been an integral contributor on five state championship squads.
This season, she is averaging an astonishing 1.92 goals per game, which ranks higher than Elkhorn’s Olivia May (34 goals) and Waterford’s Lauren Torhorst (29 goals).
Mundt emphasizes team on the field, not just scoring, and consistently puts up her numbers despite double and triple teams.
The Lady Demons are wrapping up another dominant season, and coach Joel Molitor is shooting for four straight conference championships.
Another milestone is Mundt’s career goal total, which is only eight away from 100.
She scored 34 goals as a junior, 11 as a sophomore in limited action due to a broken ankle and 20 as a freshman.
