GREEN BAY – There will be a new girls volleyball state champion this season in Division 1.
Burlington made sure of that by knocking off two-time defending state champ Divine Savior Holy Angels in dramatic fashion Thursday evening at the Resch Center in a WIAA Division 1 state quarterfinal.
After two consecutive seasons of surrendering a 2-0 lead and losing in five sets, the Lady Demons wound up on the positive side of such a comeback against the Dashers.
DSHA stormed out with a 25-13 victory in the first game, but Burlington improved in set two despite a 25-22 setback.
That’s when things got interesting.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Demons fired off convincing 25-21 and 25-17 wins before a decisive game five.
The comeback kids were at it again in the final set, as DSHA opened with a 4-1 advantage.
Including an extended point that lasted nearly a minute, the Demons showed their scrappy resiliency, firing off an 11-6 run to take a 12-10 lead.
Burlington kept the momentum going and sealed the victory with a 15-12 decision.
The Lady Demons improved to 38-9, while DSHA finishes its season at 38-12.
Burlington will battle Menomonee Falls (37-8), which swept Greendale Thursday, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20, in a D1 state semifinal Friday night at 7 p.m.
It was the Demons’ first state tournament win since 2014.
Burlington is searching for its first state title since 2012, when it completed a back-to-back championship run.
