BURLINGTON – Late last year, a foundation was built for the future of Burlington soccer.

The Burlington Youth Soccer program will be partnering with the Croatian Eagles Soccer Club and Burlington High School to form Burlington United Soccer Club this fall.

Burlington High School senior Merin Mundt and the Lady Demons are making sure the future continues the tradition of the present, which includes four straight conference championships and yet another historic accomplishment – the school’s first regional title.

Behind four goals from Mundt, paralyzing back-end defense and strong play from first-year goalies Megan Oliver and Adeline Jachim, Burlington defeated Waterford, 7-2, Saturday afternoon in a rainy, overcast affair.

It was the first regional championship in school history, boys or girls. The Burlington soccer programs began in the early 1990s.

The victory sent the Lady Demons to a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal, a rematch with Milton, the team that eliminated Burlington at Don Dalton Stadium last June, on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Much like the way Burlington jumped on and held down the throttle to crush Elkhorn 6-0 in the regional semifinal, the Demons’ offense mowed over the Wolverines with relentless efficiency.

Morgan McCourt, Jessa Burling and Gabby Pauly each found the back of the net, along with Mundt’s three scores, to give Burlington a 6-0 halftime lead.

A monsoon-like scattered rain shower hit for about 10 minutes in the second half, when Mundt added another tally and Waterford’s Kenzie Malecki added her second goal of the game.

Burlington (14-2-2) must beat Milton in order to advance to the sectional final, which would potentially be against No. 1 seed Oregon, which is ranked fifth in the state of Wisconsin in Division 2 according to wissports.net.

Milton edged Elkhorn, 2-1, to advance to sectionals.
