Lady Demons start SLC season 3-0 after sweeping Wilmot

The Burlington girls volleyball team improved to 3-0 Tuesday night with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-9 victory over visting Wilmot.
The Lady Demons, who were recently ranked honorable mention in the latest state poll, improved to 20-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
“It was a nice win against an athletic Wilmot team,” said coach Teri Leach. “We improved our play as the match progressed after a slower start. We got nice production offensively from outside hitter Abbie Koenen and middle blocker Megan Wallace.”
Wallace posted an impressive .467 hitting percentage with eight kills to lead the Demons, along with eight spikes from Abby Koenen.
The girls enjoyed solid passing from Kaley Blake and Reba Thomsen, who tallied 18 and 12 assists, respectively.
Thomsen served a perfect 100 percent and had five aces. She added eight digs and two blocks.
Alyssa Turzenski paced the squad with 15 digs, and Maddie Berezowitz had 10.
Burlington travels to Muskego Thursday night.
Girls win another tourney
Serving and spiking, it was a dominating week for the Burlington girls volleyball team.
The Demons capped a productive five-day stretch by bringing home a championship from the West Allis Hale Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10.
After breezing through pool play with victories over Racine Park (25-9, 25-13), Cedarburg (25-19, 25-15) and St. Francis (25-4, 25-10), Burlington beat Greendale Martin Luther in the semifinals (25-11, 25-12) and Hale in the championship (25-22, 25-9).
Burlington finished with a hitting percentage of .373 in the five matches as Angie Tuchel had 22 kills (.452 pct.) and eight blocks – both team highs.
The well-balanced offensive attack featured six other players with double-digit kills on the day – Grace Peyron (15), Thomsen (15), Turzenski (15), Brooklyn VandeHei (15), Koenen (13) and Coley Haggard (10).
Blake collected 18 of her team’s 60 service aces, while Mackenzie Zwiebel and Berezowitz added 11 and 10, respectively.
Blake also contributed 46 assists and 12 digs. Berezowitz led the way with 22 digs.
Splitting the setting duties with Blake, Thomsen had 39 assists to go along with 16 digs.
VandeHei chipped in 10 digs, nine aces and nine assists in addition to her 15 kills.
Conference season under way
Earlier in the week, the Demons won a pair of Southern Lakes Conference matches in equally snappy fashion.
In a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 victory over visiting Lake Geneva Badger on Tuesday, Sept. 6, Tuchel was strong at the net with six blocks and five kills. Blake (21 assists, seven digs) and Thomsen (six kills, five digs) also stood out.
In a 25-6, 25-18, 25-9 victory at Delavan-Darien on Thursday, Sept. 8, Thomsen had six aces to go along with seven kills, 14 assists and eight digs as the Demons had an attack percentage of .329.
Koenen shared team-high honors with seven kills, Turzenski had six kills and 14 digs and Blake had 20 assists and three aces.
Burlington was one of four teams to be named honorable mention in Division 1 in the first Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association state poll released on Monday.
Divine Savior Holy Angels was ranked No. 1 with Neenah and Appleton North rounding out the top three. Westosha Central was No. 8.
