Union Grove junior Riley Hale had ice in his veins Tuesday night, as his four free throws in the final minute helped the Broncos edge Burlington, 61-60, in a Southern Lakes Conference clash.
The Broncos (3-3, 1-1 SLC) squandered a late lead and trailed by one point with a minute to play.
With 23 seconds left, Hale made both free-throw attempts to give the Broncos a 59-58 advantage.
After Burlington missed on the next possession, Hale knocked down two more from the charity stripe.
Hale’s sharpshooting spearheaded a 16-for-19 night from the line for the Broncos.
He led the Broncos with 20 points, while Pettit finished with 14 points and freshman center Sam Rampulla contributed 10 points.
Nick Klug led Burlington (3-3, 1-1) with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Luke Geiger added 12 points.
Grapplers take 4th in Waunakee
The Burlington wrestling squad captured fourth overall Saturday at the Waunakee Invite and landed two individual titles.
Ben Kumprey (126) and Jake Skrundz (132) each went 4-0 on the day, and Zach Weiler (120) and Nate Crayton (182) both took second.
Skrundz scored perhaps the most impressive showing, with four pin falls totaling less than seven minutes.
After breezing to the finals, Skrundz pinned Riverdale’s Brian Mathews in 1:58 in the first place match.
Kumprey picked up a 3-0 win in the quarterfinals and followed that with an 8-3 triumph in the semifinals.
After a pin, he handled Holmen’s Trevor Plomedahl, 10-5, in the championship.
Kyle Derosier (113), Max Ehlen (138), Qwade Gehring (145), Lance Otter (170) and Max Travis (285) each came home with fifth place.
Burlington (0-1 Southern Lakes Conference) hosts Westosha Central Thursday night.
Burlington boys basketball 69, Waterford 55
The Demons doubled up the Wolverines in the first half and beat Waterford Dec. 9 in a Southern Lakes Conference boys high school basketball game at Burlington.
Burlington (2-2, 1-0 SLC) led 42-21 at halftime, and outscored Waterford 34-27 in the second half.
Luke Geiger scored a game-high 23 points for Burlington. Nick Klug scored 21.
Matt Korman led Waterford with 22 points. Ryan Jungbauer scored eight points and finished with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
Lady Demons split
On Saturday, Burlington cruised at home past nonconference foe Walworth Big Foot, 56-47.
Jessa Burling led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Mackenzie Zwiebel added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Megan Wallace had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Burlington improved to 3-5 overall.
The Waterford Union High School girls basketball team might eventually point to its 43-35 Southern Lakes Conference victory over the Demons Dec. 9 at Burlington as a pivotal moment in the season.
