The girls of the Catholic Central basketball team hope to put showings like Saturday’s behind them.
Saturday was their only game of the week, but it ended poorly for the Lady Toppers. They hope next week yields better results.
Catholic Central fell at home to conference opponent St. Thomas More on January 16 with a final score of 59-34.
Practice all week focused on defense, and yet it didn’t quite come together by game time.
Coach Suzy Bittmann recounted, “We did not execute solid defensive help and, consequently, gave up too many transition points and uncontested layups.”
What has improved, though, is rebounding. Catholic Central collected 29 total rebounds compared to Thomas More’s 25. This included six rebounds apiece from seniors Kacie Snyder and Laura Klein, and junior Bridget Bittmann.
Coach Bittmann also noticed the team committing fewer turnovers, which she says comes with “stressing patience and poise.”
By the end of the night, Laura Klein added 10 points, two assists and two steals to her rebounding total. Kacie Snyder tallied four points, two assists and two steals as well.
Catholic Central returns home to face Racine St. Cat’s Friday night.
BBW posts season high
The youthful Burlington-Badger-Wilmot gymnastics squad is improving with each meet, and last week was no exception.
Despite two dual losses, the Demons posted scores of 129.95 Jan. 14 against Mukwonago and 133.025 Saturday at Franklin, both season highs at the time.
Against Mukwonago, Mari Trent of BBW won the vault with a 8.75.
On Saturday, Burlington had its best score, 34.7, on beam, led by Trent’s 9.0.
Sophia Ellsworth posted a 9.0 on floor, and Hailey Siegler added an 8.8 on floor.
Siegler’s 33.3 all-around score was good for fourth, while Trent was right behind in fifth with a 32.8.
Head coach Andrea Hegemann is encouraged by the team’s consistent improvement.
“Warmups didn’t go too well in Franklin, and I was worried that it was going to be another rough meet for us but we started out big on vault and never looked back from there,” Hegemann said. “I think it really gave the girls a big boost of confidence to know that they could still hit in a meet even if warmups were bad.”
“Even with our 133 at Franklin, we still counted two to three points in falls and another point or two in misconnections and/or missed bonus.”
BBW returns home Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. with a nonconference dual against Waukesha West.
Home meets are at Karcher Middle School.
“I’m really pleased with how the season has gone,” Hegemann said.
Lady Demons knock off Delavan with big second half
Burlington may not have gotten the job done against Big Foot, but the Lady Demons traveled a few miles north in Walworth County and enjoyed a dominant win Jan. 22 at Delavan-Darien.
Burlington took a 24-23 lead into halftime, but erupted for a 33-8 second half en route to an easy victory over the Comets, 57-31.
Jessa Burling, who leads the Southern Lakes Conference in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.7), had a double-double with 23 points and 10 steals. She added five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
“Tonight we played a complete game,” said head coach Mary Parker. “We were able to get a lot of points in the transition off our pressure defense. We were able to keep our composure when they pressured us and made their runs. We played very patient on offense in the second half, and got better looks at the basket. The girls played with tremendous heart and desire all game long.”
Burlington (7-8, 5-3 SLC) sits three games behind first-place Wilmot in the SLC. The Demons travel to Waterford (4-11, 2-6) tonight.
After a big win over conference foe Westosha Central Jan. 14, the Burlington girls basketball squad found itself traveling to Walworth Big Foot, a small Division 4 school, Jan. 18.
The Demons fell into a 36-14 hole by halftime en route to a 60-41 defeat.
Burlington dropped to 5-8 overall with the loss.
“We dug ourselves a hole within the first 10 minutes of the game, and could not recover,” Parker said. “We did not take care of the ball on the offensive end with 22 turnovers, and that gave them way too many easy opportunities in transition on offense.”
Jessa Burling led the Demons with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Megan Wallace added 12 points and five rebounds.
Holly Johnson totaled six rebounds.
