GRAND CHUTE – Jacob Lindemann allowed his sixth, seventh and eighth runs of the season Tuesday in a WIAA Division 1 state quarterfinal against Janesville Craig.
All in the first inning.
Much like they have the entire season, a few runs meant nothing to the Burlington junior pitcher’s teammates, who scored five unanswered runs on 13 hits to hold off the defending state champion Cougars, 5-3.
Burlington (23-5) will play in a Division 1 state semifinal today at 6 p.m. against Green Bay Preble (24-5) here at Fox Cities Stadium, just outside Appleton on Interstate 41.
The Demons, who are making their third state appearance since 1991 and third overall, advance to their second semifinal (1991).
Burlington strung together four straight hits and five total in the decisive third inning, which produced three runs and gave the Demons a 4-3 lead.
Junior third baseman Dale Damon led off the second with a base hit and later scored on a Cal Tully double. Then, the momentum carried to the third inning, when senior first baseman Aaron Mutter blooped a two-run single to right field.
Damon added an RBI single, and Burlington never looked back.
Burlington starting pitcher Lindemann, who allowed three runs in the first, settled down the rest of the way, striking out six, walking three and scattering seven hits.
In the top of the sixth, Aaron Sturdevant singled, and Sean Safar pinch ran.
Tully reached on a bunt single and was thrown out trying to advance to second. Meanwhile, heady base-running allowed Safar, who stole second, to score the Demons’ final run after a throwing error.
Damon finished 3-for-4, and Zach Campbell, Tully and Tanner Strommen each stroked two hits.
