The Ice Force (8-4, 1-1 Classic 8) play a non-conference game Saturday at Beaver Dam (2-10).
The Ice Force is a high school hockey team of boys from nine schools – Franklin, Greendale, Oak Creek, Greenfield, Union Grove, Waterford, St. Francis, New Berlin Eisenhower and New Berlin West.
Schappel tied the score at 1-1 with a goal late in the first period Dec. 28 against Oshkosh (7-6).
“The second period was wide open, offensively, and eight goals were scored, with five by the Ice Force coming from five different players,” Greendale coach John Kennedy said.
Schappel scored in the second period and added another goal in the third period. Union Grove sophomore Alex Goder scored his first goal of the season in the second period.
“Owen Lemke was busy, making 51 saves in this offensive outburst for both teams,” Kennedy said.
The Ice Force allowed a goal on its first shift in the Jan. 2 game at Oshkosh. Greendale’s Jeff Schultz scored in both the second and third periods and forced overtime with the score at 3-3. Oshkosh scored in overtime for the win.
Against Beloit (3-8) Greendale trailed 2-0 after the period and evened the score with goals from Schappel and David Burton.
“I could see us wearing them down a bit in the second half of period two, and I could see the ice starting to tilt,” Kennedy said. “I had a feeling if we gave them more of the same, and stayed out of penalty box, we’d give ourselves a great chance to take the lead in the final period.”
The Ice Force scored twice in the third period and allowed a goal by Beloit. Lemke finished with 25 saves.
