Zirbel’s complete game sparks Catholic Central baseball

At Tuesday’s fourth Southern Lakes Conference Major, Burlington senior Justin Meseberg took advantage of playing on his home course.
Utilizing pars on 13 of 18 holes, Meseberg overcame a double bogey on No. 9 by finishing with a birdie on No. 18 to earn medalist honors with a 75, tying Union Grove’s Connor Brown.
Grove’s Eric Chambers, along with Lake Geneva Badger’s Jackson Rademaker and Blake Wisdom, shot a 78.
Burlington took sixth out of eight teams with a 360, thanks in part to an 88 from Reid Moen and an 89 from Danny Capozzi.

The Demons won their seventh straight game Tuesday in Union Grove thanks to a complete game masterpiece from sophomore pitcher Trent Turzenski.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander scattered six hits and struck out seven with no walks, and the Demons (8-1, 6-1 SLC) banged 10 hits.
Turzenski fired 69 strikes and only needed 101 pitches.
Zach Campbell and Trey Krause led the charge with two hits each as the Demons scored three runs in the third inning.
Jacob Lindemann added a two-run double.
Catholic Central baseball 3, Racine St. Cat’s 1
The Toppers broke the .500 mark Tuesday in Racine, improving to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the Metro Classic Conference.
Chad Zirbel was masterful on the hill, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings.
Zirbel needed 93 pitches, and he didn’t allow an earned run, as the Toppers committed two errors.
At the plate, Zirbel’s two-run triple in the third proved to be the difference.
The Toppers broke open a 1-1 tie in the third inning with two runs.
Charles Robinson and Tyler Rieck each went 2-for-3, while Tyler Swanson, Austin Neuhaus and Frank Koehnke each added a hit.
Catholic Central softball 5, Racine Lutheran 3
On Tuesday in Racine, Sydney Robson struck out 10, and Christina Paleka went 3-for-4 as the Lady Toppers remained atop the Metro Classic standings at 5-0.
Catholic Central led 4-1 before Lutheran got single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Toppers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Robson, Izzy Phillips, Haile Weis and Miriam Ward each smacked two hits.
Burlington soccer 3, Elkhorn 0
After Tuesday night, it looks like Union Grove may be the only legitimate threat to the Demons winning a fourth consecutive SLC championship.
The host Elks may have fallen out of the title picture, as the Demons scored two second-half goals to pull away and improve to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Jessa Burling opened the scoring in the first half thanks to a Hannah Anderson assist.
Morgan McCourt made it 2-0 in the 66th minute, and Anderson capped off the scoring in the 74th minute.
Goalie Cora Anderson registered 11 saves for the Demons.
